The Geuder-Geuter-Geuther Family Circle

Our Land of Choice

The United States was, without a doubt, the destination of choice for our Geuder and Geuther  immigrants. In the passenger lists and US census records, I have found about 130 GEUTHER men, women and children, and 48 with the name of GEUDER. This list is by no means complete, since not all passenger manifests have been digitized, and, as you know, the name Geuder/Geuther lends itself to frequent misspellings.

What was it like to immigrate in the 19th century?

 ... They came by boat

Traveling from Germany to the United States was a perilous journey for our ancestors in the 19th century. Often times, the trip across the Atlantic Ocean would take 4 to 6 weeks. Most of them could only afford to travel in steerage, a lower, converted cargo deck. The families were crammed into rows of bunkbeds with little room and no ventilation. During bad weather, they had to stay inside. You can imagine the smells!

Besides the lack of hygiene, there was the threat of hunger. Many ships arrived in the "New World" with people sick and barely alive. The ones that died during the journey were buried at sea. Husbands lost wives, women, husbands and children. And children were born during the transit. Leonard Geuder was born at sea, in 1852. His parents, Johann Sebastian Geuder and A.Margaretha Werlein, came from Moerlbach, Germany, and settled in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Why did our ancestors leave family and home to brave danger, hardship and uncertainty?

To find a better life, greater opportunities, a place of personal and religious freedom. This is what they hoped for.

The Arrival

Immigration from Germany began in 1690 with small religious communities settling in Pennsylvania. Though, I could not find one Geuder or Geuther among them. The first Geuder/Geuther appears in the US in 1820, and that is when the flow of German people to America began in earnest. In the following century, almost 7 million Germans came to the US. And around the turn of the century, one third of the country's population was of German speaking ancestry.

Before 1855, the immigration process was relatively easy. The individual harbor offices were responsible for checking the passenger lists handed to them by the captain of the ships. Once they touched American soil, the immigrants were on their own.

From 1855 to 1892, Castle Garden was established as immigration station in New York. Now, newcomers had to show a minimum of financial means, or have a sponsor; they also had to be free of serious illnesses and physical handicaps. People with contagious illnesses were quarantined; others were turned away.

In 1892, Ellis Island became the gates to America. As America filled up with immigrants from many nations the flow was gradually restricted and immigration quotas were introduced. Already in 1875, settlers thought that most of the good land was taken.

                       Ellis Island, 1892

Most immigrants were young men and women, also many families with small children, whereas older people rarely decided to leave their home country. They were adventurous, strong people with a thirst for independence and freedom.

Where did they settle?

Once our Geuder and Geuther families arrived in the United States they settled as farmers, shopkeepers and tradespeople primarily in Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. Often, other family members and neighbors joined them in the new country, and together they created a village life that resembled very much the one they had left behind in the old country. They had German speaking schools, churches, and newspapers. They cooked, baked and brewed in the typical German tradition. They married, gossiped, sang and were buried with German words.

And some of them are still growing corn on the same farms in Illinois today. See Reunions.

Few, if none, went to California for the Gold Rush. I found only one passenger, Thomas Geuder, who worked in 1850 as a sailor on the "SS Oregon" that travelled from Panama to San Francisco. If he jumped ship there and followed the lure of gold, I could not tell.
